What is involved in rewiring a house or a flat?

Rewiring a home can be considered as a major project. It involves putting up wires around your home and then these wires have to be joined to your sockets and fittings.

However, the amazing thing about starting such a project is that you will be able to map your home as you like. This includes installing sockets, light fittings and switches where you need them most. This can modernise your home and make your life easier.

Rewiring your home can also give you the chance to install smart home features such as speaker systems, automated lights.

The work involves installing cables under floorboards, across ceilings and within walls. Your home should be empty as electricians will need to access floorboards. Keep in mind that you might need to make a deal with plasterers and decorators because redecorating and plastering work will need to be undertaken afterwards.

Rewiring is done in two parts. The first, which is called the first fix, includes the installation of new wires and cables across your home. The second part, which is called the second fix, is when electricity runs through the wires and when the switch, lights and the front faces of sockets are fitted.

In between the two fixes, other work should take place. This work isn’t electric related and it includes filling holes, putting back your carpets and maybe having to redecorate.

How long does it take to rewire a house?

A full house rewiring job would approximately take 7 to 10 working days. It would involve different stages.

What are the stages involved in house rewiring?

Firstly, we have the preparation stage. The floor or ceiling will be opened up depending on the route of the wires. Your carpets and floors will be covered for protection from any damage. The drywalls will be taken off and finally the plans for the wiring are made.

Old wires will be taken out and new chasing made. After that our electrician will drill new holes and add new cable.

When your walls are plastered, your floors and ceiling are recovered and your kitchen tops are constructed, our team will start connecting sockets, lights, switches and appliances to your new cables.

Lastly, an inspection is carried out to make sure that everything is working as it should and that there are no problems.

What to do before rewiring can take place?

Before our electrician can get started there are few things you need to perform around your house.

Your new cables will be installed in walls, under floors and ceilings so it is important that you clear your rooms of furniture as well as lift any flooring or carpets.

What is more, to reach the ceiling on your top floor, you might need to make some space in your loft area for easy access.

We can help guide you through what needs to be done beforehand so that upon our arrival there will not be any delays. Electrical plans will be needed. You can provide one if you already have one or you can leave that to us.

How long does it take to rewire a home?

The time needed for rewiring a home largely depends on how big your place is and the complexity of the work. The more lights, sockets and switches you require the more time it can take.

On some occasions, running the wires and cables can take more than usual due to the layout of your place. In general, it can take 7 to 10 working days to rewire a three bedroom house. Just call us and we can provide you with a bespoke quote.

What is the cost for rewiring a house?

The cost will depend on the amount of electrical points and the size of your home. It can range between £2000 to £10,000.

A flat would be cheaper to rewire than a three bedroom house. The amount of lights, switches and sockets you need also play an important role in determining the price. The more you need the higher the price will be as more work is involved. The type of walls in your property is also an important factor. Concrete walls are harder to work with than plasterboard walls.

How often should I rewire my home?

There are many good reasons for rewiring your home. Some signs can indicate that you need to rewire your home such as having an old fuse box instead of a modern consumer unit. In some cases, rewiring would be recommended when you have purchased a property.

If you are renovating your home, then you might require rewiring. Other cases would include building an extension, which will need to be supplied with electricity. In case you want to let out a house, you will need to comply with the required safety and regulations for tenants.

In short, Power Full Electrical can help you rewire a house or a flat no matter the reason for it. We are both Certified and registered with NICEIC.

Rewiring Flats

Although a flat is smaller than a house, rewiring a flat can present a challenge due to the difficulty associated with accessing ceilings and floors. So that is why you need professional electricians who can carry out the job smoothly and with little disturbance. And this is exactly what we provide.

Rewiring old homes

A lot of older homes might have electrics and cabling that can be described as dangerous and out of date. It is advisable to consider rewiring your home if it hasn’t had any electrical work done in the past 30 years.

Many signs can indicate that your home has old wiring. These include: rubber or fabric cabling, plug sockets fitted to skirting boards or an old fuse box with a wooden back.

New Plug Sockets

More than often you find yourself in need of rewiring a part of your home. For instance, when you need additional plug sockets or light switches in a certain room or your kitchen. Adding extra plug sockets to kitchens is quite popular due to the many appliances needed in a kitchen.

You might find yourself in need of a coffee machine or a dishwasher but there’s no additional sockets to plug these new appliances. Well, all you need to do is to give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

We can fit your kitchen with USB functionality or down lighters under kitchen units. Our team of electricians can help you modernise your kitchen.
