How long can electric wiring last in a house?

Theoretically speaking, it can last up to 100 years. However, the condition of the sheeting of the cables can play an important rule in determining the lifespan of electrical wiring. In short, the sheeting of the cables can last around 50 years. Other factors may include how old your house is and when it was built and the type of installation and thermal protection used.  

How many outputs can be put on a breaker?

Sockets are usually installed on a ring circuit on an 32amp breaker. So a ring can withstand around 7200 watts. Infinite amount of sockets can be put on ring but that’s just in theory. The actual number shouldn’t be more than 20 outlets.  

Does old wiring consume more electricity than new wiring?

Old wiring has no direct effect on your electrical bills. But it can affect your power usage in an indirect way. It can do that through incorrect or defective wiring. 

Is it ok to mix aluminium and copper wiring?

It is possible to mix copper and aluminium wiring using a special splice connector. However, you can expect some problems with such a mixture. When different metals collide one of the two can start to rust faster than the other one.  

How long does it take to rewire a house?

A full house rewiring job would approximately take 7 to 10 working days. It would involve different stages. 

Is it possible to rewire a house without removing drywall?

There are two methods to rewiring a house. The first one is done through installing wires in the ceiling and the second through the floors. However, in both methods your drywalls have to be removed or damaged. It would be impossible to tear out cables without opening drywall because they are always clipped to joists.  

Is it possible to wire a new consumer unit to old wiring?

Yes, a new consumer unit can be installed to the old wiring but there are cases when it can’t and there is only one way to find out.  Generally speaking, yes! However, in some situations this can’t happen. First, an electrical inspection should take place to see whether it is possible or not. This inspection would check the conditions of your cables and if it is safe enough. 

What’s the best place to install a fuse box?


There isn’t a specific location to place a fuse box. However, some requirements should be met at the place of installation.   Firstly, the place should be easily accessed. What is more, it should be spacious enough and can be accessed without using a ladder. In short, it should be installed in a location which can be accessed by an electrician or by yourself. This can make repairs and replacements or inspection fairly easy.  

How often should I have an EICR?

If you have a business then you should do it every five years. As for homeowners, it is to be carried out every ten years and if you have a swimming pool then it should be tested every year. Lastly, your electrical installations should be tested every five years or when a new tenant enters the property for buy-to-let or rented property.  

What is done during an electrical safety inspection?

We’ll check: 

  • The suitability of the controlgear and the switchgear 
  • The adequacy of the earthing and bonding 
  • The type and the condition of the wiring 
  • How serviceable is the equipment 
  • Damages, wear and tear and any deterioration 
  • The presence of adequate notices and identification  
  • RCD’s provision socket-outlets and their condition. 

When to call an emergency electrician?

Electrical problems that may be hazardous are, without a doubt, considered to be emergencies. However, sometimes an electrical emergency would be your call, depending on the situation you find yourself in and how important the faulty part is to your home or business.  Some signs can easily indicate that you have a serious electrical problem. These can include smoke coming out of a socket, a burning smell, a humming or buzzing sound coming from the consumer unit. In these cases, we advise that you turn off the power supply and call an expert.  

What is the cost for rewiring a house?

The cost will depend on the amount of electrical points and the size of your home. It can range between £2000 to £10,000.   A flat would be cheaper to rewire than a three bedroom house. The amount of lights, switches and sockets you need also play an important role in determining the price. The more you need the higher the price will be as more work is involved. The type of walls in your property is also an important factor. Concrete walls are harder to work with than plasterboard walls.
