Fuse Box (Consumer Unit) Replacement

Modern fuse box units consist of a main switch, residual devices (also known as RCD’s) and finally circuit breakers. The purpose of these consumer units is to control the supply of electricity in your home. RCD switches work by always monitoring the electrical currents in your household. If any electricity runs through an unintended object, the electricity will be switched off within a fraction of a second in order to reduce the risk of getting injured.

A modern fuse box unit can reduce the risks involved of electric shock or electrical fire. It is advisable to get a new one if you are still using an old style consumer box.

New consumer units are more practical. If a circuit trips in an old fuse box, you will need to replace a fuse. However, with a new unit, a flick of a switch is enough to get things back to normal.

Why get a consumer box replacement?

There are numerous risks associated with old consumer box units. New fuse boxes would shut down if you receive a shock. Something old units aren’t capable of doing.

When it comes to fire safety, newer models have more regulations than older units. New consumer units are inspected regularly.

These units can be overloaded because they are usually stored inside casings or under the stairs. This lack of ventilation can make them fire prone. That is why non-combustible casing is recommended.

What’s the best place to install a fuse box?

There isn’t a specific location to place a fuse box. However, some requirements should be met at the place of installation.

Firstly, the place should be easily accessed. What is more, it should be spacious enough and can be accessed without using a ladder. In short, it should be installed in a location which can be accessed by an electrician or by yourself. This can make repairs and replacements or inspection fairly easy.

Is it possible to wire a new consumer unit to old wiring?

Yes, a new consumer unit can be installed to the old wiring but there are cases when it can’t and there is only one way to find out.

Generally speaking, yes! However, in some situations this can’t happen. First, an electrical inspection should take place to see whether it is possible or not. This inspection would check the conditions of your cables and if it is safe enough.

How long does it take to replace a fuse box?

The time needed to replace a fuse box depends on each case individually and the size of your unit. Generally speaking, it can take 1 to 3 hours to replace a fuse box. It also depends on how many circuits are to be cones. A small 6 circuit box can take less time, whereas a larger one with more than 16 can take longer time. The condition of your old box also plays an important role. Are the wires well managed? Are there certain faults?
